The Incredible Kicks

The Incredible Kicks are a new alternative rock band consisting of Travis Hair (Vocals,Guitar and Piano) Josh Griffin (Drums and Backing Vocals) and Luis A. Bran (Bass Guitar and Backing Vocals.) The Band released their first EP Fairytales in August 2011 and their second entitled Ineffective Lullabies will be released on July 13th. They have toured East Australia a number of times and have also supported the Australian Prog Rockers “Closure In Moscow”. The band has kindly given us a sneak preview of it and we are excited to give our readers an exclusive review.
The EP begins with a short lively introduction entitled Prince Charming (Reprise). The piece features rowdy guitar riffs at an insane speed. If you think this is eccentric, its only a taste of what is yet to come. The next song is footprints which has a really nice guitar introduction but you soon realise that its like a strange but genius combination of Queen and the Pixies. “Ratings” has a muse-esque like intro but afterwords you do start to hear the band developing their own sound. Something that impressed while listening to this EP was the versatility of the guitar as they constantly change throughout all the songs and bring another level of excitement to them. Next is the song “Ineffective lullabies” which is my personal favourite, its slightly darker sounding that the past tracks and is much more structured and steady. I especially like the melody that is played throughout this song by the piano. “S'tover” is probably the saddest song lyrics wise which is cleverly accompanied by loud and heavy guitars. The next song “Last Person Alive” has a nice gentle build up that grows into a fast paced guitar solo, the vocals here are a highlight for me as they really show a lot of emotion and make the listener believe that the experience is happening. The EP is brought to a close with the song “Prince Charming” I thought this was a very nice song to end the EP with as it almost combines all the good aspects of the other songs together and makes it into one. The guitar here once again was a joy to listen to and I left listening to this EP fresh and wanting to hear some more.

Compared to their First EP Fairytales, I felt this EP was greatly improved, the band appears to have began developing their own sound and they show a lot of confidence in featuring large instrumental areas which is quite unusual to hear from bands in this genre. There is a good blend of positive and negative songs and that opens the EP up for a big range of listeners. I am looking forward to the next album or EP to see how the band further develop their sound and see what other variations of madness they can come up with.
